Job Description: Optical Testing Engineer

As a Optical Testing Engineer at Dream Photonics, you will own the end-to-end characterization, automation, and analysis of our silicon photonics optical I/O and hybrid integration technologies. You’ll work hands-on with electro-optical test equipment, automated probe stations, tunable lasers, optical spectrum analyzers, detectors, and custom fixtures. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Automated & Manual PIC Characterization:
    • Operate and maintain our automated probe stations to perform high-throughput measurements of photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
    • Execute manual bench tests integrating various electro-optical characterization instruments, including tunable lasers and optical power monitors as well as optical spectrum analyzers.
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot instrument operation, test sequences, optical alignment, probe contact, and electrical/optical signal issues to maximize data quality and yield.
  • Instrument Control & Automation:
    • Architect, develop, and maintain Python-based automation frameworks (SCPI-over-GPIB/LXI/VISA) for multi-instrument test sequences.
    • Integrate new hardware (e.g., probes, switches, detectors) into existing test beds, validating end-to-end automation workflows.
  • Data Processing & Analysis:
    • Design and implement data pipelines in Python using NumPy, Pandas, and SciPy to clean, calibrate, aggregate, and analyze large experimental datasets.
    • Apply signal-processing techniques and visualize results with python to extract device metrics such as insertion loss, bandwidth, and polarization-dependent loss.
  • Technical Reporting & Documentation:
    • Author and maintain detailed test plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and calibration logs to ensure reproducibility and compliance.
    • Compile comprehensive technical reports and whitepapers summarizing experimental methodologies, findings, and recommendations.
    • Present results and road-map proposals to internal R&D teams, external partners, and key customers.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with design and packaging teams to align on test requirements, share insights, and accelerate product iterations.
  • Laboratory & Inventory Management:
    • Manage inventory of wafers, dies, probes, optical fiber arrays, and consumables; maintain accurate records and build upon/develop lab information management systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering ), Engineering Physics, Photonics, or a closely related discipline. Excellent candidates with a diploma in engineering programs will also be considered.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics test equipment and in a lab environment
  • Proficiency in utilizing programming languages for data analysis and visualization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, with polished presentation abilities
  • Strong analytical mindset and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and resourceful: able to design and execute independent research to solve novel problems

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience using Python for  data analysis and visualization (including using specific libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib (or similar libraries), as well as for peripherals readout and control .
  • Prior experience with interfacing to test and measurement instruments using standard protocols (SCPI/GPIB/LXI/VISA scripting) 
  • Prior experience with working with optical test and measurement instruments (lasers, optical power meters, polarization controllers, etc.)

Job Description: Optical Packaging Technician

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The Optical Packaging Technician will be responsible for building integrated photonic assemblies containing optical fibres, lasers, silicon photonic chips, and CMOS electronics chips. To fabricate said assemblies, the technician will utilize numerous pieces of equipment, including the Vanguard Automation SONATA 1000 for two-photon-lithography in the UBC QMI Nanofabrication facility. As such, the technician should be comfortable working in a clean room environment. The technician will also perform  packaging processes including wafer dicing (DISCO DAD3240), electrical wire bonding (TPT HB100 Automatic Thermosonic Wedge & Ball Bonder), attaching small components and chips on carriers (TPT T-3000-PRO Die Bonder), and encapsulating them. This work requires that the technician possesses a high-degree of dexterity and attention to detail. The technician will follow process procedures; produce specifications and documentation to manage the fabrication of assemblies and processes.

The following items reflect the most important tasks:

  • Plans and delivers nanofabrication process work for the realization of micro- and nano-structured devices, using techniques that include, but are not limited to, 3D printing , electrical wire bonding, die attach, metrology, and testing.
  • Works on a number of different projects, that includes internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Carries out processing of existing nano/micro-fabrication and packaging techniques.
  • Monitors process performance to ensure that these processes remain operational and perform to specifications. Perform measurements to characterize the devices by generating test programs.
  • Interacts with team members to report on results, coordinate work, and ship parts.
  • Produces the necessary documentation and technical reports on the work done to present internally and/or externally to clients and customers.
  • Keeps inventory of required materials and orders as required. 
  • Assists with shipping and receiving of parts to and from customers and suppliers.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications

  • College or technical institute diploma, or Bachelors degree BASc (or equivalent) in engineering, or applied sciences. Experience in working in a  lab environment.
  • Experience working with a programming language for data analysis
  • Track record of working across organizations and with customers
  • Attention to detail, good communication, presentation, and analytical skills 
  • Self motivated

Preferred qualifications

  • Prior experience with device fabrication or packaging, preferably photonic devices
  • Working knowledge of Python for instrument I/O and data handling
  • Experience in working in a clean room environment, including micro/nano-fabrication equipment such as two-photon lithography, optical lithography, resist processing, and working with other chemicals in a wet bench environment
  • Ability to work after regular business hours as needed; additional compensation will be provided for approved after hours work.

    First tapeout to build the Dream Photonics Process Design Kit for AIM Photonics.

    First packaging customer

    Engaged with customers and partners to enable hybrid integration solutions using photonic wirebonds. Dream Photonics enabled a fiber attach solution for AMF silicon photonics platform using photonic wirebonds which is currently available as a public offering.

    AIM PDK Released

    Official launch of the Dream Photonics AIM PDK.

    The Dream Photonics Process Design Kit (PDK) enables a wide-range of custom applications by providing various leading-edge (O-band and C-band components) with layout-views, extensive documentation, and advanced circuit simulation model based on experimental data (for various EDA toolsets). PDK includes a selection of Dream Photonics leading-edge silicon-verified devices and application examples for O-band and C-band (for both, TE and TM polarizations).

  • Enabled hybrid laser integration Multi-Project-Wafer run

    Enabled the first open-access MPW tape-out with hybrid integrated lasers in collaboration with Applied Nanotools and CMC Microsystems. 

     

  • 2023:

     

    Establishment and growth

    Expanded portfolio of PIC hybrid integration solutions through photonic wirebonding. Expanded the IP Cores offering and PDK maturity by collaborating with additional foundry partners and customers.

  • Received IRAP Support

    Dream Photonics received support from the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program. Dream Photonics was one of 11 Canadian firms funded to collaborate on projects with U.K. partners. The firms were selected following a joint Canada–UK R&D call for proposals by the NRC and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

    Commercialization Award

    Dream Photonics Senior Scientist Matthew Mitchell wins Commercialization Award from MITACS for his work addressing the critical packaging challenges facing the emerging photonics industry using photonic wire bonds.

    20th Customer

    Dream Photonics continues to grow and signs 20th customer.

     

    2024:

Dream Photonics Inc. is a technology spin-off from UBC, co-founded by Prof. Lukas Chrostowski and Prof. Sudip Shekhar, combining decades of academic and industry experience in silicon photonics and CMOS electronics. 

Dream Photonics is actively engaged in process design kit development for silicon photonics foundries across the globe. Simulation, design, and test data for silicon photonics components are provided by Dream Photonics to the foundry such that customers can use these components in their designs with confidence. Dream photonics has access to the first tool in the world capable of performing photonic wire bonding as a service. This service offers fiber-to-chip, chip-to-chip, and on-chip laser and fiber integration with silicon photonics via photonic wire bonds. Dream Photonics is also working with several end customers on their system IP needs.
